In the past month, aircrafts have not been the only things taking off in the Louisiana Tech aviation department.

A partnership between Tech and ExpressJet regional airline has been in the works for less than a month leading up to an agreement signing today.

Jordan Lyons, head of the aviation department, said ExpressJet called him his first day as department head, Sept. 1.

“From the beginning it’s been go, go, go,” he said. “We came up with a draft agreement, and submitted it for approval. We don’t actually have it back yet, but ExpressJet and the administration are confident it will go through, so we’re going ahead with the agreement signing.”

Lyons said there is excitement on both sides of the partnership.

On his end, he said the program opens up a lot of doors for the students.

“This is just one more opportunity for our students to be prepared for a career after graduation,” Lyons said. “Students will have professional mentors, so that once they have the academic experience, they can become conditional hires of ExpressJet.”

Lyons said ExpressJet has also shown enthusiasm for the partnership.

“They are flying a regional jet out to the Ruston airport for the presentation Thursday,” he said. “They care about our students that much. They are spending that much money and effort to present to our students.”

Lyons said he is particularly excited about the effect the deal will have on the students.

“It’s comforting for them to know when they start a program, there’s a career at the end of the tunnel,”  he said.
