No-prah 2020

January 23, 2018

Since her Golden Globes speech, the internet has been buzzing with rumors of Oprah Winfrey’s intention to run for president in 2020.

While some American citizens are dreaming of a Trump-Winfrey showdown in the next presidential election, others have quickly dismissed the idea, as Winfrey has never held political office before.

Celebrity politics is neither a new nor uniquely American idea; actresses Eva Peron and Gina Lollobrigida held political positions in Argentina and Italy respectively, and prior to his presidency, Ronald Reagan had a thirty-year career as a Hollywood actor. Though the list of celebrities who have entered the world of politics goes on, the question is still asked: should celebrities be involved in politics at all?

Many claim celebrities have no right to even voice opinions on political issues at all, let alone run for office. In 2016, during the heated election between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, actor Mark Wahlberg famously said celebrities should not discuss politics because they are out of touch with the common man and are unaware of the struggles ordinary people face.

“A lot of celebrities did, do and shouldn’t talk politics,” he told Task & Purpose magazine. “They might buy your CD or watch your movie, but you don’t put food on their table. You don’t pay their bills. A lot of Hollywood is living in a bubble.”

However, other celebrities are extremely vocal about their political opinions. Model and television personality Chrissy Teigen is such a vocal critic of the Trump administration that the president has blocked her on Twitter.

Both Wahlberg and Teigen — as well as other celebrities — have been met with criticism for their comments. But whether a celebrity decides to stay quiet or voice their concerns, the American public and the media outlets are always quick to jump in and attack their decision; there seems to be no safe option.

At The Tech Talk, we think celebrities have the right to voice opinions, just like every other United States citizen. As residents of this country, the decisions that are made by the government affect them as well as the common man. However, it is important that the American people do not base their own political views on those of celebrities.

We should be cautious of celebrities who decide to run for office, especially if they have no previous political experience, as politics are complicated and status does not equal qualification. It must be noted that an inspiring speech does not make a person equipped to run a country, and the presidency should not be a person’s first step into politics.

Should any celebrity decide to run for office, it is our duty to research and make ourselves acquainted with their policies and points-of-view — as we should with any candidate — before making an informed decision rather than choosing to endorse them as a candidate simply because we are fans of their work.
