At the beginning of the 2014 Louisiana Tech softball season, the lone senior, Katelyn Hill, would be playing for the first time in two years.

Hill underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in her shoulder in the 2013 season and would not play at all in her junior season.

Hill said she suffered the injury in high school and played through it in her first two seasons at Louisiana Tech.

“I played through it for three years, and my junior year Coach Montgomery said he thinks I should have the surgery,” Hill said.

Hill said the doctor who operated on her said that her torn labrum was the worst that he had ever seen.

“I want these ladies to be able to pick up their child when they are 30 years old not worrying about an injury stopping that,” Montgomery said.

Hill then had to go through six months of rehabilitation to get her shoulder back to full strength.

“The time was frustrating because you have to add on a couple of months to get back in shape after the six months of rehab,” Hill said.

Hill gives credit to Montgomery for letting her travel with the team and completely be a part of the team even though she could not play.

“You could tell she was starting to get it and become a leader by the things she was saying in the dugout and how she was reacting to teammates,” Montgomery said.

Hill is a speech pathology major and plans to take a year off and then go to graduate school.

In her year off, she plans to go home  to Dallas, Texas and help coach her high school softball team and to make an impact there.

“I think it is great that she loves the game so much that she wants to view how it is from a coach’s perspective and see if that is for her,” Montgomery said.

Hill also will be working in a clinic with a speech pathologist to get the experience she needs to get into grad school.
