Knocking down pins with senior bowler LaKeya Smith

by Justin Phillips

Tech’s women’s bowling program began four years ago. LaKeya Smith, a graduate student of marketing, is one of six women to be a member of the women’s bowling team all four years since the program’s creation. The team’s final tournament is the Releaser’s Invitational Feb. 8 in Tallahassee, Fla. Here is Smith’s Tech Talk Player Profile:

What is your favorite sport to watch outside of bowling?

I’m a big football fan. Go Giants! I’m really a fan of the underdogs. I want them to win the Super Bowl.

What sport would you play if you were not a bowler at Tech?

Actually, I’d probably be a cheerleader. I was the captain of a national championship cheerleading squad my senior year in high school. I’d love to do that again.

Who is your favorite athlete of all time?

My dad would have to be my favorite athlete. He’s a great bowler.

What was the last movie you saw in theaters?

I saw “Why Did I Get Married?” I loved it. It’s because I support all of Tyler Perry’s work.

What is the worst date you have ever been on?

It always seems like guys find out I bowl and then they want to take me bowling. I hate that because I bowl all the time anyway!

What is your highest bowling score?

I bowled a 264 back at home one time. It was last year.

What do you plan on doing with your bowling career after college?

I’m actually planning on becoming a semi-professional this summer. The first tournament I have is in Florida at the beginning of July.

What is the one Tech bowling experience you’re going to take away from here when you graduate?

I learned how to play laser tag. Just about every other tournament we’ve gone to has had a place to play laser tag. I’ve gotten really good. I know one thing, I’m not half as bad as coach [Jackson] is.
