Ashaolu leads Tech over Houston Baptist

Junior forward Olu Ashaolu had a stellar game Tuesday night, as he led the Bulldogs over Houston Baptist 80-57 in Houston.

The game snapped a three-game losing streak on the road.

  Head coach Kerry Rupp said a win on the road is always exciting.

“We tried to be more active on the defensive end, and I thought we did that for a while tonight,”?Rupp said. “When you play hard, you have to play smart as well.”

Rupp said his team had good energy, as junior forward Olu Ashaolu missed only three shots during the game’s entirety. He recorded his sixth double-double and 13 rebounds – a season high. 

The first half ended with the Bulldogs up by just eight points, as they shot for 58.1 percent. Freshman guard Cordarius Johnson shot two three-pointers, the first in the opening half to advance the Bulldogs 19-6 with 12:08 remaining. 

With a halftime score of 43-35, Tech came out on fire in the second half as they scored eight unanswered points, upping the lead 57-40 with 14:37 to play. 

The Bulldogs held lead in the 20 point range for the rest of the game. The final score was the largest lead Tech had, as they improved to 8-4. 

In addition to Ashaolu and Johnson’s phenomenal night, senior guard De Andre brown scored 14 points.

The Bulldogs are looking foward to facing their next rival Saturday night:?the 5-3 UT-Artlington Mavericks who are coming off of a road loss at Samford, 

Tech will host UT-Arlington at 7 p.m. Dec. 18 at the Thomas Assembly Center.
