Louisiana Tech’s men’s and women’s basketball teams started the season off with a win each in a pair of exhibition games Tuesday night at the Thomas Assembly Center.

The Lady Techsters took the court for the first time since the NCAA Tournament last season and defeated Arkansas-Monticello 88-65 in the first game of the doubleheader.

Senior forward Adrienne Johnson led the way with 18 points and 13 rebounds, while junior guard Angie Felton added 15 points of her own to propel the Lady Techsters to a victory.

Techsters head coach Teresa Weatherspoon said the exhibition gave her team an idea of where they stand.

“It was good to see them compete and see the differences in intensity level change from practice,” Weatherspoon said.

On the men’s side, the Bulldogs stormed to an 84-45 win over Champion Baptist College behind a stellar performance by sophomore forward Darius Redding, who raked in 10 points and five rebounds in 18 minutes on the court.

Head coach Kerry Rupp said the game was a great way for the Bulldogs to build cohesiveness within the team.

“If we’re going to be a very good team, we have to be great at defending and rebounding,” Rupp said. “Our focus was to come out and play against ourselves and make sure we execute our offense.”

The women’s team will host another exhibition against Oklahoma Panhandle State at 7 p.m. Friday in the TAC, while the men’s team opens the 2010-11 regular season at Texas on Nov. 10 at 8 p.m. on ESPNU.
